LET’S KEEP THE ADVENTURE GOING!

Experience the wonders that nature created on the “inside of a mountain”. Linville Caverns provides guided tours into Humpback Mountain, taking visitors along a smooth walkway beside an underground stream. Stalactites, stalagmites, a vast array of mineral colors, the “Bottomless Pool,” and a glimpse of total darkness are all part of this underground trip.

Less than 20 minutes north of SSBD, (mile marker 316) Linville Falls is the most photographed waterfall in North Carolina. The falls move in several distinct steps, beginning in a twin set of upper falls, moving down a small gorge, and finally culminating in a high-volume 90-foot drop. Linville Falls has the highest volume of any waterfall on the Northern Edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Just thirty minutes away, take your family on scenic horseback rides or learn a new skill with riding lessons for all skill levels and ages at Elk Mountain Riding Company.

Less than 20 minutes south (mile post 339) lies another natural beauty.  Crabtree Falls, a 70 ft waterfall, can be reached via an easier 3-mile hike or a more challenging 3.5-mile loop trail that takes you along a ridge above the falls. Either path winds you through beautiful woods, with plenty of wildflowers dotting your way during the summer.

There’s so much to see and do at Tweetsie Railroad, a family-friendly wild west theme park located 33 miles north of the campground in Blowing Rock (mile post 292). Trains, live shows, rides, a deer park, and other fun activities await your family!

Travel one hour south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to mile post 355 to visit the Mount Mitchell state park, featuring the highest peak east of the Mississippi.
