Spacious Skies Balsam Woods to Open Sites for Total Solar Eclipse

ABBOT, MAINE, Feb. 28, 2024 – Central Maine’s Spacious Skies Balsam Woods campground will open 18 RV sites April 5-11 and provide electricity to its guests who want to experience the solar eclipse in the path of totality on the afternoon of April 8. The campground opens and resumes normal operations for the season on May 17.

Select campsites and cabins will be open for nights before and after the eclipse.
RV sites will have electricity and cable available. Rustic cabins will be available as well, and one open bathroom will be available in the main office. Water to fill tanks will be accessible at a spigot conveniently located at the main office.

Spacious Skies Balsam Woods has earned the distinction of being an Eclipse Ambassador Partner. General manager Bobbie Seiler completed a three-week online course on the road to certification, learning tools and techniques to share knowledge about the eclipse with local communities and as a campground host.
“This is such a great opportunity for our ‘cosmic campers’ to view and learn about the eclipse at the same time,” said Seiler. “There will also be plenty of local attractions and activities to make this a multi-day event.”

The solar eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8. In Abbot, Maine, it begins at 2:19 p.m. and ends at 4:40 p.m., reaching its maximum at 2:32 p.m. Totality will last for one minute, 57 seconds.
Seiler suggests that viewers plan to arrive early and depart late enough to avoid expected high traffic. She also recommends campers bring plenty of water and propane and make sure their black water tanks are empty. The campground’s dump station will be available to campers.

Many towns and cities along the path of totality will be hosting activities and events. For a complete list, go to https://maineeclipse.com/.

Spacious Skies Balsam Woods features 84 RV sites, three deluxe cabins, three rustic cabins and four tent sites. Its woodsy location is just a half hour from Moosehead Lake – the largest lake in the state – and 60 miles from Mt. Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

Local attractions include more than 1,000 miles of ATV trails that can be accessed directly from the campground, Piper Pond, Moosehead Lake, the Currier Aviation Museum, Hundred Mile Wilderness, Appalachian Trail, Low’s Covered Bridge, Northeast Whitewater Rafting and Moose Tours and Blacksmith Shop Museum.

Campers can reserve sites and cabins online or by calling 207-876-2731.
